Understanding The Lateral Line Of Bass

The lateral line is located on both sides of bass and made up of nerve endings that extend towards the skin of the fish. Whether or not the lateral line actualy allows the bass to locate prey is up for debate.

I have caught several largemouth bass in the past that have either had a single or both eyes damaged. Since the fish caught were all several pounds in weight it would seem that the fish were able to feed without the sense of sight. Also, since caught on lures I would presume these bass were not using the sense of smell to pinpoint the bait.

Whether the lateral line is used to pinpoint bait of feeding bass I do know using lures that cause alot of vibration will help you catch more bass in dirty waters.
